The Nelson Region has two distinctive wine growing areas; the Waimea Plains and the Moutere Clay Hills. We will be visiting small boutique wineries, set in beautiful landscapes. Our region is famous for its aromatic wines but we are equally capable of producing stunning Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc and red wine varieties.
I have a passion for wine - I work at several different vineyards during the season in various capacities; picking, pruning, tying down, selling, bottling and of course enjoying the wine! This gives me a wide knowledge of our local wine region.
You can expect to sample fantastic wines, talk to the people involved, visit small boutique wineries, see amazing scenery along the way and have a fabulous lunch in one of the vineyard restaurants.
One of the vineyards we visit is Rimu Grove.
“The Rimu Grove Home Vineyard was planted in 1995 and comprises 7 hectares of Pinot Noir, Chardonnay and Pinot Gris vines laid out on the gentle north facing slope of the Bronte Peninsula overlooking the Waimea Inlet.
Nelson has New Zealand’s highest sunshine hours and this fact, coupled with the temperate maritime microclimate and the ancient glacial gravels of the Moutere Clays, all contribute to making this the beloved home of 20,000 precious vines.
The vineyard is meticulously hand-maintained and the grapes hand-harvested - the vines are pampered and spoilt in royal fashion.”
